Steelhenge Amsterdam: Step Out of the “Cloud” and Feel the Cosmos!

If you’re looking for a unique spiritual experience—something truly different—you can’t miss Steelhenge! Yes, it’s winter and a bit chilly, but that’s more than made up for at Stenen Hoofd, on the IJ in Amsterdam. There, with a wink to the famous Stonehenge, stands an installation of 12 astro-stands, each 6 meters tall. These steel columns represent the signs of the zodiac, arranged in a circle in the order of the zodiac, illuminated and accompanied by a hypnotic blend of light and sound.

Steelhenge 2026

Steelhenge is a migrating spiritual space that builds on the legacy of Robodock. It offers room for diverse art forms and disciplines, and calls on all of us to reflect on the times we inhabit and the many crises and disruptions that shape them.

AstroStands x Defqon

In 2022, Defqon became partner for placement of AstroStands. For this commission, we developed eight fire effects which, combined with a bespoke lighting narrative, brought our cosmic story to life!  The installation was positioned along a central walkway, encountered daily by approximately ninety thousand visitors! The positive response led to a follow-up commission and further expansion. A variation of the installation was also presented at Paaspop where it was seen by more than sixty thousand visitors. That same year, we created an initial scale model to explore different spatial configurations.

Robodock

It has now been many years since Robodock took place. Yet we still carry the memories with us: the vast, flowing spectacle of makers, technicians and roboteers, combined with theater, performance and music. For years we built a festival city from recycled-tech materials and found objects. Robodock was always full of idealism - an attempt to create and preserve a better world in a time when vacant shipyards still offered oceans of free space in Amsterdam.
